What Is Ortho-k?
For many people, wearing contacts or glasses every day is frustrating. If you want to improve your vision but aren't interested in a surgical procedure, like LASIK, Ortho-k may be the right solution. Orthokeratology, or Ortho-k, is an innovative treatment specially designed to correct refractive errors and enhance a patient's vision by temporarily reshaping the cornea. The lenses used in Ortho-k treatments are called rigid gas permeable contact lenses, or molds. These molds are generally worn at night to reshape the cornea while the patient sleeps, allowing the patient to experience clearer vision during the day as a result of the nightly reshaping. The benefits from this treatment are temporary so the use of the lenses must be continued as directed to experience optimal results.
What Should I Expect with Ortho-k?
When you come for your appointment, we will perform a few tests to evaluate your eye health. We will also perform tests to map and measure the surface of your cornea using a corneal topographer so we can obtain a detailed view of your cornea's shape. This data, combined with measurements of corneal size and your specific prescription needs, informs the custom design of your Ortho-k lenses. After your lenses are complete, you will return to our office to collect your Ortho-k retainer lenses. This visit includes instructions on lens insertion, removal, and maintenance, alongside a fitting and evaluation of the retainers. A follow-up visit will be scheduled after the initial night of wear to assess the retainers' fit and the correction achieved. This session also includes another corneal mapping to monitor changes.
We will monitor your corneal health and the treatment's success throughout the fitting process, adjusting the retainer lenses as necessary. The duration for visible treatment results varies among individuals with factors influencing the pace of improvement. Depending on these variables, some may need to wear their retainers nightly to maintain vision correction while others might only need to do so intermittently.
