Understanding Computer Vision Syndrome

At the office of IC Laser Eye Care, we provide care to help patients enjoy optimal vision and protect the health of their eyes.
Let's face it, for many of us looking at a digital screen is a fact of daily life. And, while the benefits of modern technology are undeniable, it's also becoming increasingly evident that dependence on these devices has consequences on one's health and overall well-being. With problematic issues such as harsh screen contrast, flicker, and glare, the visual challenges of computer use are numerous. You can also strain your eyes by focusing at the same distance for a lengthy period, or when you shift your gaze from papers on the desk to back up at the screen.
Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is the name given to a group of eye problems and vision-related symptoms caused by prolonged use of hi-tech digital screen devices.
Symptoms of computer vision syndrome, also referred to as digital eyestrain, may include:
- Eye Irritation (dry eyes, itchy eyes, red eyes)
- Double Vision
- Blurred Vision
- Headaches
- Neck, shoulder, or back pain
While computer vision syndrome can affect one's performance at work, in school, and at home, simple steps such as scheduling regular eye care at our office and establishing healthy computer habits, helps prevent any vision or musculoskeletal problems.
When examining your eyes and assessing your vision, we'll determine if you need a new prescription for corrective lenses or a special one for working on the computer. We'll provide guidance on preventing and alleviating symptoms of computer vision syndrome. You'll also be advised of measures that can be taken to improve your computer-viewing environment and given helpful recommendations about giving your eyes a periodic break.
At the office of IC Laser Eye Care, we're dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate care. For more information on our office and the many services that we provide, give us a call today.
